Strasbourg, 8th of June 2005

Platform for Transparency created by MEPs van Buitenen, Martin and Mote

Three Members of the European Parliament, all Members of the Budget Control Committee,

Paul van Buitenen from the Netherlands, elected in 2004 on his own transparency list with 7% of the Dutch votes,
Hans-Peter Martin from Austria, elected on his own list with 14% of the Austrian votes, and
Ashley Mote from the United Kingdom, elected in the EP as member of the UK Independence Party, now an independent member of the EP,

have decided to coordinate their efforts for transparency.

We are not traditional politicians. Coming from different political backgrounds and with different visions on Europe, we have several important things in common:

- We are independent actors, under no overruling party discipline

- We want to shed light on the wheeling and dealing of the EU

- We fundamentally distrust the will of the political establishment to hold the EU to account

- We don't think this EU constitution was such a good idea.

In the past months, we have met regularly to discuss these issues. Now we make our cooperation public by means of a common press conference.

At this moment our cooperation is a Platform for Transparency (PfT) and are not a political group. There are requests by other MEP's of different nationalities who want to join this Platform for Transparency, if it evolves into a political group.

What we envisage, among other priorities, is to 'investigate the investigators', namely the Court of Auditors in Luxembourg and OLAF.
